Being the
youngest of a large family, my musical tastes can
be described as wide-ranged with an emphasized
exposure to rock, but no particular focus on any
one style or genre. Growing up in a house with
pre-baby boom parents, the music I heard growing
up ranged from parents listening and dancing in
the living room to early Rock n Roll, brothers and
sisters whose tastes ranged from 60s rock and
classic country, to 70s acid rock and country, to
early 80s rock, to my teen years of late 80s pop
and rock.
My basic
music education comes from playing the sax in
school and a couple of basic music theory
classes. My greatest benefit from these years
would, however, be the lifelong friends which I
made. One of those close friends decided after 3½
years of architecture classes that he wanted to
change his major to music composition. This
prompted me to purchase and take up the bass.
From late 2003 on, we spent many weekend hours
playing various compositions and cover songs as my
skills improved. In 2006, we began seriously
considering starting to perform and record some of
his music until, unfortunately, he died early that
summer. For several months following his death, I
found little enjoyment in playing.
Enter Mike
Morris in the fall of 2006: Mike is a guy I work
at the same company with, but about which I knew
very little. In casual conversation one day, he
mentioned that he heard I played guitar. After
learning I played bass, he immediately inquired if
I wanted to play as Nine1Nine was looking for
someone to fill that roll, allowing their existing
player to move to a new instrument, and invited me
to a try-out. He stressed the laid-back, no
pressure, NAA policy of the band, and it
definitely struck my interest. After an evening
of playing some music, Nine1Nine graciously
invited me in.
I can say that I’m very appreciative of the group
of people I get to jam with week in and week out.
We work hard to play well, but in the end it
really has been about getting along and having
fun. I hope this comes through in the music we
play for you. Enjoy…..
