My musical journey began with the drums and progressed shortly to guitar and bass guitar. While growing up in the Canal Zone(Zonians Rock!) I played drums and guitar in several bands. I played in bands that didn’t last long and played in several that played every venue in town. I had lots of influences but no teachers. I became a sponge when ever anybody offered a new idea or song to learn. After graduating high school and playing in one of the longer running bands I mentioned before it became time for me to come stateside to work.

I moved to Houston and started working. While working I was meeting musicians, seeing as much live music as I could and enjoying the club scene. I was always open to jam with folks and the opportunity presented itself on a regular basis. The work schedule prevented me from forming any music projects that would require a lot of time and I resigned myself to jamming whenever I could.

During my current job I ended up joining up with a local singer/songwriter named David Legate and his band. David had enjoyed regional success with his music and after an audition I was asked to join up with a great group of guys. We became friends and just generally enjoyed playing out. I also started adding guitar, bass and drum tracks to what would become a former friend’s original music. Ego is a terrible thing when it takes over common sense and makes people believe they are rock stars in their own mind. Sadly the band with David broke up when all of the members but me left town in pursuit of different job opportunities. At least we all stayed friends.

As the original music project reared what would eventually become it’s ugly head. I  spent 3 years working with this project. While proud of the music that I added my guitar work to, the petty squabbling and ego driven rants of a ship of fools would eventually water down the music to drivel and wear down interest in further musical contributions from me. It was during this time I starting advertising for some new singers and musicians to work with.

Enter Guy. An immediate kinship was struck up. Due to problems that the future partners had with previous experiences we decided to institute a strict NAA policy. No matter how good the musician was there would be NO ASSHOLES ALLOWED. Michael joined up with us as he agreed with the NAA policy. Ric followed a short year later, then Iris joined up with us. Donnie was a real find for us and finished up the lineup.

I am excited by the creative process that is flowing within NINE1NINE. It took a while to find the rest of the musicians to finish out the band but they have been worth the wait. NINE1NINE has become an openly creative and supportive process with all the band members encouraged to contribute. Most of all it has been about having FUN!!!  When you add that to the musical pie the creative process can take you in so many directions. That is what music is and always will be about.
